Football Prediction Review: A Before-and-After Worksheet

By Opta Tips Team Updated

Review the exact market settlement and the saved pre-match reasoning separately, using a copyable table without rewriting the prediction after the result.

Football, notebook and pen on a stadium bench after a match

A useful review starts with the note that existed before kickoff. Without it, a convincing post-match explanation can quietly replace the original reasoning. Keep two tasks separate: checking settlement and examining what the forecast assumed.

Save the before column while the result is unknown

Record the fixture, competition, venue, kickoff time and time zone. Write the exact market, line and settlement period. Save the quoted price and its observation time separately from any price you actually obtained. Include the source and time of each news item used.

Label an unresolved lineup as an assumption. If official information later changes the assessment, retain the earlier note and timestamp the update rather than overwriting history.

The same score can settle different selections differently

Consider a fictional regulation-time score of Home 2–1 Away. A home-win selection wins; Over 2.5 wins; an exact 1–1 selection loses; and Home −1 pushes under standard whole-goal Asian-handicap rules. The final score is the same, but the contracts differ.

If a fictional 10-unit full-win cash bet has decimal odds of 2.00, the return is 20 and the profit is 10. A full loss loses 10, and a full push returns 10 for zero profit. Do not assign those calculations to a real OptaTips entry unless its actual stake, price and settlement inputs are available.

Review reasoning without using hindsight as evidence

Ask whether the initial note relied on accurate information available at its timestamp, whether alternatives were considered and whether the conclusion exceeded the evidence. A correct result does not validate every premise; an incorrect result does not establish that every premise was wrong.

If a percentage was published, preserve it. Repeated probability forecasts need an evaluation dataset, not a verdict based on one match. If no probability was supplied, do not invent one for the review.

Correct a record without claiming what you cannot verify

A wrong score or a market-label error should be distinguished from an unsuccessful forecast. State what changed and why. When a public record conflicts with an identified official result, provide the entry reference and supporting evidence through the site’s support channel rather than silently changing the interpretation.

Use the pre-match research guide for the original note, partial settlement guide for quarter lines and probability guide for evaluating percentages over time.

For adults aged 18 and over. These explanations do not guarantee a match outcome or profit. Use services only where legal and do not risk funds you cannot afford to lose.
