A falling price is an observation. “An injury caused it” or “sharp money arrived” is an explanation that needs separate evidence. A chart can show a movement accurately without revealing the identity or intention of the people behind it.
Record a comparable price
Keep the fixture, market, line, odds format, source and time constant enough for a comparison. A home-win price is not comparable to a home −0.5 quote without checking the precise rules. A price on a different handicap can change because the selected event changed.
Also separate a bookmaker quote from an exchange price and note whether displayed liquidity or other limitations apply. A screenshot without an observation time cannot establish the order of a price change and a news announcement.
Build a timeline before assigning a cause
| Fictional time | Observed information | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 10:00 UTC | Decimal home-win quote 2.00 | One recorded price |
| 10:30 UTC | Club publishes an availability update | Time and contents of official news |
| 10:40 UTC | Same-source quote 1.90 | A later recorded price |
This invented timeline places an announcement between two observations. It does not isolate its causal effect, establish who traded or rule out other market changes. The observations should remain separate from the analyst’s interpretation.
Treat possible explanations as hypotheses
Team information, changes in demand, liquidity and a provider’s own pricing adjustments are possibilities to investigate. Do not convert a possibility into a reported fact simply because it sounds plausible. Where the source does not disclose order flow or customer identity, a claim about particular traders may be unverifiable.
A closing-price comparison also needs rules
Specify what counts as the closing observation, which source supplied it and whether the line remained the same. A favourable comparison can describe the recorded prices without proving a lasting predictive advantage or a profitable result.
If you cannot obtain a matched comparison, leave the field blank or mark it unavailable. Do not label an earlier publication price “closing odds” merely because the match is now finished.
Preserve the uncertainty in the research note
Write “price shortened after the announcement; cause not established” when that is all the evidence supports. Save the source links, time zones and screenshots or records available to you. Do not retroactively claim access to information before it was public.
द pre-match worksheet separates confirmed information from assumptions. The margin explanation helps keep price-based probabilities distinct from claims about the event’s true probability.
