Soccer Ball

The Kelly Criterion is a staking formula developed by John Kelly at Bell Labs in the 1950s for gambling and investing. It tells you how much of your bankroll to bet when you have an edge. In theory, it grows your bankroll faster than any other staking plan. In practice, most football bettors should not use full Kelly because it is too aggressive.

How the Formula Works

Kelly stake = (bp – q) / b, where b is the decimal odds minus 1, p is your estimated probability of winning, and q is 1 minus p. If you estimate a 55% chance at odds of 2.10, then b = 1.10, p = 0.55, q = 0.45. Kelly = (1.10 x 0.55 – 0.45) / 1.10 = (0.605 – 0.45) / 1.10 = 0.141. So you bet about 14% of your bankroll. That is a lot.

For football betting, full Kelly stakes are almost always too high. Most edges are small (2-5%), which means Kelly suggests betting 1-5% of your bankroll. But if your probability estimate is off by even 5%, Kelly tells you to bet a size that loses money.

Why Full Kelly Is Too Aggressive

The problem is that your probability estimate will always be wrong. If you think a team has a 55% chance but it actually has a 50% chance, Kelly tells you to bet a sizeable edge that does not exist. Full Kelly bettors can see 20-30% swings in their bankroll in a single week. Most people cannot handle that emotionally, and they abandon the system after a bad run.

There is also the issue of simultaneous bets. Kelly was designed for one bet at a time. When you bet on multiple matches in a weekend, the formula does not account for correlation. Two bets on the same league, or two bets on the same team winning, are not independent. Full Kelly over-bets in these cases.

Use Fractional Kelly

Sharp bettors use quarter-Kelly or half-Kelly instead. A small edge at 2.00 odds, which Kelly would size at 0.5%, becomes 0.25% or even 0.125%. This slows growth but dramatically reduces the chance of going broke. It also keeps you in the game long enough for your edge to matter.

Half-Kelly grows your bankroll at about 75% of full Kelly rate but with half the volatility. That is a great trade-off for most bettors. If you have a $1,000 bankroll and a 5% edge at 2.00 odds, full Kelly says bet $50. Half-Kelly says bet $25. Quarter-Kelly says $12.50. Start with quarter-Kelly until you have six months of verified results.

When Kelly Makes Sense

If you have a very strong model, large sample sizes, and you trust your probability estimates, Kelly is mathematically optimal. This applies to professional bettors with quantitative models. But for most football bettors reading form and team news, flat staking at 1-2% is safer and simpler.

You can always move to fractional Kelly once you have six months of verified profit. Until then, flat staking removes the temptation to over-bet. The goal is not maximum growth; it is survival and consistency.

Kelly vs Flat Staking

Flat staking bets the same dollar amount every time. Kelly scales your stake with your edge. If your edge is consistent, Kelly grows faster. If your edge varies wildly, flat staking is safer. Most football bettors have inconsistent edges, so flat staking is the better default.

La conclusión

Kelly Criterion is a powerful tool, but it is not for everyone. Use flat staking at 1-2% until you have proven profit over 100+ bets. Then consider half-Kelly on your best markets. Never use full Kelly on a small sample. The bettors who last longest are not the ones who bet the biggest; they are the ones who survive the variance.

Preguntas frecuentes

Confidence no equivale a ventaja.

Si eres rentable tras 100 selecciones resueltas, tienes algo real. Si no, ajusta o detente.

  • Retira tus beneficios regularmente.
