A team’s last five home matches can be useful to inspect. Five results are not enough context on their own. A run against struggling opponents, a series of red cards or a changing lineup can produce the same average as a very different set of matches.

Separate the observations before averaging them

Create one row per match, with the date, opponent, competition, venue and score. State whether cup games, neutral venues and extra time are included. If you are comparing league performance, do not quietly mix it with friendlies or matches played under different conditions.

A home record and an away record should use comparable periods and definitions. Five recent matches can span different amounts of calendar time for different teams. The number of rows is not the same as the continuity of the team or its circumstances.

A worked sample shows what an average hides

Consider an invented home sample with goals scored of 3, 2, 2, 1 and 0. The total is eight and the average is 1.6. That figure describes these five observations. It does not establish that the team will score 1.6 goals in its next game, or that a goals market has a particular probability.

Add opponent information and the pattern may become more interpretable: were the first three games against weaker opposition, were there dismissals, and did the lineup change? These questions cannot be answered by the average alone.

Check opponent strength without inventing an adjustment

Use a consistent, dated reference such as the relevant league position or a disclosed rating. State its limits: a table position early in a season is itself based on a small sample, and a rating belongs to a particular method. Do not attach made-up “strength-adjusted” numbers to a descriptive table.

Record conditions that affect comparability

CampoWhy it belongs in the note
Opponent and dateIdentifies the schedule behind the result
Venue and competitionPrevents mixing different contexts
Red cards and score stateFlags unusual match conditions
Confirmed lineup changesShows whether the same team process is being observed
Source and observation timeMakes the sample reviewable

Do not exclude awkward defeats merely because they weaken the pattern. If you present a filtered sample, explain every exclusion and show how the choice changes the scope.

Keep descriptive form separate from the selection

A strong home average and a high away-concession average may motivate a research question. They do not, without further modelling, prove the total goals or winner of the fixture. Define the market and record what remains uncertain.

Use team form and match context for the broader research framework, and the match worksheet to preserve the sample and assumptions. Any claimed Europe-wide home-win percentage needs an identified dataset and period; this guide does not invent one.
